Structure of the Network
The Network's fifty-six founding members represent different organisations
and disciplines from across the nation and provide a range and mix of the widest
scientific and geographic distribution to strengthen the Network's proposed
research directions. The NGED is able to benefit from the many national and
international linkages of its network members. Aimed at becoming the overarching
network to meet the needs of this field in Australia, the NGED involves postgraduate
students, junior and senior scientists who share a desire to explore collaborative
research activities across traditional discipline boundaries.
The Network has established a number of working groups whose responsibilities
are outlined below:
Network Convenors
The Network's Convenor is Associate Professor Rob
Richards, University of Adelaide.
The Network's Deputy Convenor is Professor Caroline
McMillen, University of South Australia.
National Benefits Advisory Board
Current Members of the Network's National Benefits Advisory Board are:
Prof Eric Haan
Clinical Genetics Services, Women's and Children's Hospital, Adelaide
Dr Greg Harper
Manager, Strategic Science, Meat and Livestock Australia, Newstead, QLD
Prof Robert Norman

NGED Management Group
The members of the Management Group, Network Convenors, Rob
Richards and Caroline McMillen,
and Marketing & Communication Officer, Marina
Delpin, are responsible for maintaining effective communication with all members
of the Network and representatives from the relevant government organisations
and key policy makers from end user groups. The management team will propose conduct
of business guidelines and financial management for the Research Network.
NGED Steering Group
The Network Steering Group oversees the planning of NGED workshops, the preparation
of the Network's report and the generation and maintenance of the Network's
web page. This group is also is responsible for the 'sustenance' and 'recruitment'
of NGED members, ensuring that the NGED member base reflects a healthy balance
of researchers, young investigators, postgraduate students, industry representatives,
end users, and international members. The Steering Group communicates regularly
to take key decisions with regard to policy and budget allocation etc.

NGED Workshops and Meetings
The NGED holds annual workshops to:
- Discuss the aims and progress in research undertaken by Network members
- Highlight the progress in existing cross-disciplinary collaborative research
work
- Identify opportunities for future collaborative research activity across traditional
discipline boundaries
- Provide young researchers and postgraduate students with an opportunity to advance
their knowledge and critical skills across the disciplines
Other workshops will address:
- Breaking the intergenerational cycle of disease
- Linking epigenetics into systems development
- Career development
- Brainstorming to generate new enabling technologies
- Technology training workshops
- Epigenetics and environment contributions to adult disease
- Drawing together indigenous health researchers with early development physiologists
and geneticists
All workshops will have a strong focus on student and early career scientist
participation and will involve key international speakers.
