NGED Membership
New members
As the funding structure of the NGED does not allow unlimited expansion of
our activities, the Network has decided to focus on strategic growth and to
keep the number of Network Members to approximately seventy. The Network is
continuously reviewing its membership and is focussed on strengthening the NGED
by recruiting from areas currently under-represented within the Network. Priority
is given to investigators from new or different areas (i.e. new research field
or industry), or to someone from a sophisticated, but remote organisation, with
a high probability of collaborating across disciplinary boundaries within the
Network. The NGED intends to facilitate interaction between geographically isolated
researchers and current members of the Network, as well as researchers new to
Australia. At present, the NGED is comprised of 64 laboratories and additions
to the membership have currently been placed on hold.
Current members
The Network in Genes and Environment in Development (NGED) was established
in 2004 through an ARC/NHMRC Research Network Grant. The grant provides support
to NGED members and affiliate members to develop new collaborations, partnerships
and training opportunities in the areas of developmental research. NGED Members
are expected to actively participate in Network activities, i.e.
- Attendance at the NGED Forum, if available,
- Update member profile on a regular basis,
- Encourage affiliate members to actively participate in Network activities,
- Promote interaction with other members of the Network,
- Contribute to some administrative and organisational role when the opportunity
arises.
Whilst the initial membership of the NGED was restricted by the format of the
application for Network funding to a maximum of 50 participants, our membership
has grown to a total of 64 'Full Members' in 2006, representing 22 organisations
from South Australia, Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland, Western Australia,
and the ACT.
Staff and students employed within Network Member laboratories build the NGED
affiliate member base. All Affiliate Members are eligible to apply for funding
under the many Network programs that have been established to support early
career researchers and students and to promote cross-disciplinary interaction.
One of the main events to foster communication amongst Network Members is the
annual NGED Forum, a meeting of approximately 100-120 delegates to share their
expertise in the different fields of development represented in the Network.
The NGED fully funds the travel and accommodation associated with the forum
for all Network Members and a representative from each Network laboratory. The
'all expenses paid' format of the forum has proven to be extremely successful
as the number of delegates allows in-depth interaction within a collegial environment.
